A mosaic of open land and forest habitats traditionally characterises the forest and meadow valleys of the Sauerland. Some valleys have recently lost their diversity because of land use changes. In the Liese Valley, however, you can still experience this diversity today.

The fascinating journey through the reserve will take you from the Liese Valley with its forests and meadows to the mountain heathland of the Hilmesberg.

The bottom of the Liese Valley is used as grassland, so that the forest is restricted to the valley slopes, except for a narrow Alder gallery forest bordering the stream. The species-rich wet grassland in the valley flowers colourfully in May and June. Here you can find among the countless flowers such special species as the buttercup-yellow Globeflower or the Broad-leaved Marsh Orchid, a native species of orchid.

Between May and September, you can catch sight of the Red-backed Shrike on top of thorn bushes and hedges in the Liese Valley. Also listen out for the typical "krrrraeh" call of the Nutcracker which is often heard in the Liese Valley.

You get a great view of the valley itself from the Hilmesberg, on which the mountain heath is particularly attractive when the heather is blooming in late summer.

Turn-by-turn directions

At the hiking car park, first go to the street, turn right and walk a short distance before you can turn right into the road called "Liesetal". Follow this road parallel to the valley, without turning off. You hike up to the source of the Liese and circle the small valley with its meadows before turning right and continuing on the other side of the valley. When a second side valley opens on the left-hand side, follow the path uphill (passing a hut). Turn right at each of the first two trail intersections and left at the third. Back on the valley trail, turn left at the next junction and hike uphill until you reach the signs at the Hilmesberg and then hike around the mountain heath there. At the next two intersections keep right and then stay on the path until it meets an asphalted road. There you turn right and walk downhill into the valley. At the bottom, you turn left and come back to the starting point of the trail.

Note: The route of the nature trail has meanwhile been changed and is therefore not shown correctly in either the flyer or the book!

Public transport

The closest bus stop if you are arriving from the direction of Medebach is called "Liesen, Dorfstraße", and if you are arriving from the direction of Hallenberg, the stop is called “Liesen, Am Mühlenbach” (about 5 minutes’ walk to the starting point of the trail).
