Rothaarweg
The Rothaarweg is about 130 km long and is part of the European long-distance hiking trail E1. It runs from Brilon through the Sauerland and Siegerland, or Wittgensteiner Land, to Siegen and has some climbs and fantastic views in store for us.
1st stage: Brilon - Niedersfeld . Like the Rothaarsteig, the Rothaarweg starts at the market square in Brilon. However, we head for a different day's destination on the Rothaarweg, namely Niedersfelden. After Brilon, we first hike up a short, steep ascent into the Brioner Bürgerwald forest and soon pass the Hiebammenhütte. We then continue around the Borberg to the ruins of Borgbergs Kirchhof, and along the Schusterknapp, Habberg and Ginsterkopf to the natural monument of the fire oak. There we take a short rest. Recovered, we now hike on the Höhenweg past the Bruchhauser Steinen, touch the village of the same name and hike straight through the Gaugrebenscher Wald to our stage destination Niedersfeld. Here we are spoilt for choice with the wide range of accommodation on offer. 2nd stage: Niedersfeld - Oberkirchen . From Niedersfeld, the Rothaarweg runs along the European Long Distance Trail E1 and is therefore part of the International Long Distance Trail. We leave the village in
